Hi my name is Jennifer Stevens, I have completed a Bachelor of
Art's/Pathways to Secondary Degree at the University of Western Sydney
and am now en.rolled in the Graduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching
through the Australian Catholic University, In my under graduate degree I
completed four education units that gave me a glimpse into the world of
secondary education and was fortunate to begin a 'prac' on a voluntary
basis as an assistant to the special education unit at a Western Sydney
school. During this time my role included mentoring students from years
7-10, working with years 11 and 12, helping students organize and
research topic specific information for the HSC and working on a one to
one basis with students that faced challenges in literacy, oral and
written, in various topic areas.
I have five children who range in age from 12-24 years of age, the
experiences and interactions with them along side voluntary work with
PCYC in Penrith and six years working as an early childhood program
developer have given me valuable skills that I hope to bring into
teaching .Not only is working with students demanding and
challenging, but accommodating and facilitating different personalities,
age and stage groups and also considering the variations in a students
cultural/socioeconomic capital, calls for a teacher to wear many
different professional hats in one day.
I believe that 'knowing your subject and how to teach it' is a great
platform from which a teacher can then combine organizational skills,
ICT capabilities, enthusiasm and creativity in lesson planning and
delivery and is not just the desire to facilitate learning, but be a
'life long learner', adapting professional skills and subject knowledge
as we develop as a teacher. We learn from out students, education is an
inclusive and dynamic profession and we must be able and willing to meet
challenges as they arise.
